Skills for Work is a national programme aimed at providing training opportunities to help employees deal with the demands of the changing workplace. The programme is fully funded by the Department of Education and Skills.

Skills for Work programmes aim to: 

  • Promote an ethos of lifelong learning in the workplace

  • Contribute towards the creation of a well-educated and highly skilled workforce

  • Raise the competency levels of employees with low levels of educational qualifications 

  • Support employees to develop strong communication and basic IT skills

Basic skills opportunities for those in employment. Courses may be delivered onsite or in our centres and can be tailored to suit the needs of employees and employers. 

Courses may include:

  • Communications for the Workplace

  • Workplace Mathematics

  • Customer Care

  • Computers and Technology

  • English Language (limited to specific sectors)

Family Learning

Family Learning Programmes are run in partnership with schools and community groups.  These courses aim to provide parents and carers with the skills they need to support children through school years.

They also give parents and carers an opportunity to take a step back into learning in a relaxed and friendly environment. 

Courses are usually run on an outreach basis in local schools or community settings.  

Courses may include

  • Creative Play for Parents and Younger Children

  • Story Sacks

  • Maths for Parents and Carers 

  • Keeping Safe with Computers and Technology 

  • Family Language 

  • Settling into Secondary School

Getting Started: Key Skills Programme

Students will work on: 

  • Basic reading and writing skills

  • Spelling and writing techniques

  • Basic number skills

  • Beginner and improver computer skills

  • Preparing for certification

Students will develop new skills and gain confidence working in small groups. These courses focus on skills we need for everyday life and support progression to further education, training or employment. 

Students will be offered support and guidance on what options are available to them and how they might take the next step and work towards a national qualification.

Award: QQI Level 4 Component Certificates

Duration: Academic Year, part-time, participation times will vary with modules undertaken

Learners can do any amount of the five modules offered to build their own timetable to suit their individual learning needs. The modules offered on this course provide an excellent opportunity to develop IT skills to progress to further education or the workplace, or to upskill in this area for personal gain.

Modules Included:

  • Microsoft Excel: Spreadsheet Methods 4N1120 (September to December) Monday and Thursday 9.30am to 11.30am

  • Microsoft Word: Word Processing 4N1123 (September to December) Wednesday 9.30am to 2.30pm

  • General Computer Skills: Computer Applications 4N1112 (January to May) Wednesday 9.30am to 2.30pm

  • Computer Graphics: Desktop Publishing 4N1854 (January to May) Monday and Thursday 9.30am to 11.30am

Course Requirements:

  • It is recommended that participants have a good understanding of computers or have achieved a level 3 award.

  • For those with English as a second language, a good standard of both written and spoken English is required.

    Progression routes:

  • The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to progress to further education or employment in a variety of different areas.
